Tart Cherry Helped Me!
As a lifelong fitness enthusiast, to be told I would never again be able to work out, run, hike, bike or dance again…devastating. And the reason? Ironically, the amount of activity I have done throughout my lifetime. As in, the exercise I was always told I needed! Go figure.
I started with a chiropractor who told me I have a twisted pelvis…which is weird because that’s my college nickname. I went for a few adjustments but there was no relief. Some time passed and I was in so much pain and so limited in my movements I had to ask for help in the bathroom…in a most unsightly way. My relationship thankfully withstood that test and my derriere the attention it needed. That, my friends, is the sign of a real man and real love.
Figuring I was rock bottom with this back/hip issue I tried another chiropractor. She was wonderful. It took weeks to get my hip realigned and to reduce the inflammation. However, she cautioned me that I would deal with this hip pain permanently.
It is where my hip meets my back, not where my hip meets my thigh. It is a degenerative hip socket. You can’t rebuild it. Too much break dancing in my life…ugh the ‘80s.
It’s Working!
Within the first 2 weeks of drinking it daily, I forgot about my pain. This pain was fairly all consuming prior to the introduction of tart cherry juice to my diet. My pain and discomfort would not alleviate no matter the position I was in. Sitting hurt. Standing hurt. Walking hurt. Even worse, I was gaining weight because I couldn’t be active which only compounds the pressure on the back and hip. I was miserable before tart cherry juice.
By week three, I realized I hadn’t even thought about pain in weeks. It wasn’t in my mind to complain about because it wasn’t in my body to complain about.
I now drink it religiously and it has completely relieved my inflammation and joint pain. In fact, just this summer I cleared 3 acres of timber; cut it, carried it and split it. No pain. Besides I had ZERO limitations on movements; on weight I was lifting; on muscles I was using.
The back/hip pain I was told I would have to learn to live with, is now completely gone. The only time it sneaks back,on a very subtle level, is if I run out of juice. So, I never run out anymore!
Not Just Any Cherry… Montmorency
There is a big difference between the sweet Bing cherries you get during the summer and the tart cherries called the Montmorency Cherry. More studies have been done with this tart cherry, producing a vast list of health benefits attributed to this small little fruit. As well, how the cherries are grown and harvested can make or break this little guy’s abilities to help the body. I trust Stanton Orchard for their product. From harvest to bottling, they follow best practices for preserving these precious nutrients.

“Tart cherry juice contains variety of polyphenolic compounds, potassium, etc.,” she tells Bicycling. “The health benefits associated with the consumption of tart cherries may include decreased muscle damage following strenuous exercise, reduced muscle pain, [and] improved sleep,” she says.
Just make sure you’re drinking the tart, Montmorency kind—sorry, those sugar-laden, artificially flavored “cherry” drinks aren’t going to bring the same benefits.
According to a 2016 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, “tart Montmorency cherries contain high concentrations of phytochemicals and anthocyanins, which have recently been linked to improved athletic recovery and subsequent performance.”
According to Sheau Ching Chai, Ph.D., R.D., assistant professor at the University of Delaware’s department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition
If Dr. Oz’s word isn’t enough, here is a link to one of the clinical studies by The National Center for Biotechnology Information. It’s pretty heady but if you take your time you will see the marked improvement of the majority of test subjects in inflammation, joint pain; improved sleep and many, many other benefits.
I hope this helps!
